Air New Zealand Limited (AIZ) provides transportation of passengers and cargo on scheduled airline services within, to and from New Zealand. It operates flights domestically both within New Zealand and Australia, and internationally extensively covering the Asian region, United States and Europe. International operations are undertaken independently and through codesharing. AIZ is also a full member of the Star Alliance network - the world`s largest multi-airline alliance.

AIZ began operations in 1940 as Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL) and was renamed Air New Zealand in 1965. Owned by the New Zealand government, Air New Zealand was privatised and then listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange in 1989.

In September 1996 AIZ bought 50% of Ansett Holdings, and in June 2000 bought the remaining 50%.

In March 1999 Air New Zealand became a full member of the Star Alliance Group. And in August 2000, Singapore Airlines became a 25% shareholder in Air New Zealand.

Air New Zealand (AIZ) operate in international and domestic air transport services with its main activity being passenger airline operations. A significant proportion of the Company`s total revenue is also derived from cargo, mail and contracting services cargo. AIZ also provide engineering and ground handling services involving maintenance, repair and overhaul services.

Air New Zealand`s global reach is enhanced by membership in the Star Alliance, the world`s largest alliance. This provides exposure and recognition in markets where traditionally AIZ has had minimal sales and marketing presence.

AIZ services the NZ and Australian domestic market, as well as the International flights market around the Asia Pacific Region and NZ. AIZ also offer flights to the US and Europe. AIZ`s engineering and ground handling division provide services to both AIZ and Ansett fleets as well as to third parties.
AIZ`s main domestic competitors are Qantas, Ansett and new arrivals Virgin Blue. Qantas is also the closest International competitor along with Singapore Airlines, British Airways and United Airlines.
