Nicknamed the Flying Kangaroo, Qantas is Australia's largest and oldest airline carrying +34M passengers annually. Qantas was privatised in 1995, with British Airways assuming an initial 25% shareholding (which has since been sold). Qantas has a two-thirds share of the domestic market and accounts for approximately one third of Australia's share of international inbound and outbound passengers. It is a member of the Oneworld airline alliance.

QANTAS (Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited) was formed on 16 November 1920 with headquarters in Winton, which moved to Longreach in 1921. In 1922, the company's first scheduled mail and passenger flights operated between Charleville and Cloncurry. In 1929, it set up its workshop at Longreach. The company's outback network extended to Brisbane and in 1930, the company established its headquarters there. Qantas listed on the ASX on 31 July 1995.

QAN is Australia's leading operator of global and domestic air transport services and is involved in the sale of worldwide and domestic holiday tours and associated support activities, including IT, catering, ground handling and engineering and maintenance. The industry faces several macro factors that may impact earnings - competition, terrorism, war, political fall-out, regulatory issues, economic slowdowns and oil prices.

Jetstar's quick rise to be one of the world's most successful low-cost carriers places the Qantas Group well in terms of product offering and differentiation. Its strong fleet order book of A380s and B787 Dreamliners gives it a significant competitive advantage over other airlines. QAN's ability to re deploy Jetstar planes on lower yielding routes will be a good competitive advantage while demand is weak.

Customers: Government and corporate accounts; leisure travellers; select air freight handling companies; travel agents; and wholesalers. Major competitors are the players in the international aviation industry such as Air New Zealand, Cathay Pacific, Thai Airways, Virgin Blue, Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines and in freight other handlers like DHL, UPS, FedEx and various customs brokers.
